Expanding the Work
Beyond Traditional Settings

The conditions that help young people thrive — belonging, emotional safety, strong relationships, voice, and supportive communities — matter far beyond school walls. SCCI is expanding its work into the full range of environments where culture and connection shape who young people become.

Why This Work Extends Beyond Schools

Over time, one thing became increasingly clear: the foundational conditions that support learning, wellbeing, leadership, and growth are not unique to schools or camps.
Any environment where young people gather, collaborate, build relationships, and develop identity is shaped by culture. That culture either supports them or it doesn’t — and the difference is rarely accidental.
SCCI’s work has always been about creating intentional conditions for people to thrive. Those conditions travel. They apply wherever communities form, wherever adults guide young people, and wherever belonging and growth are on the line.
That includes camps, community organizations, youth programs, leadership initiatives, informal learning spaces, and partnership models that are still taking shape.

What Remains Consistent Across Communities

What remains consistent across communities

  • Belonging

Every person in a community needs to feel genuinely seen, valued, and included. Belonging isn't a program — it's built through daily interactions, shared norms, and the tone set by leadership.

  • Relationships

Positive relationships between young people and the adults in their lives are one of the strongest predictors of healthy development. Intentional relationship-building is always part of the work.

  • Voice & Agency

When young people have real opportunities to shape their environments, they invest in them. Centering voice and agency is both a core value and a practical strategy.

  • Supportive Systems

Individual relationships don't exist in a vacuum. The structures, practices, and policies surrounding them either reinforce or undermine the culture you're trying to build.

Where This Work Is Growing

Camp and out-of-school time environments are uniquely positioned to support social and emotional growth because they are immersive, relational, and community-centered by design.

Where this work is growing

  • Established Camps

SCCI's work with camps is the most established expression of the Beyond model — bringing culture, character development, belonging, and SEL integration into immersive, relationship-centered environments where young people and staff grow together.

  • Growing Youth-Serving Organizations

Community-based organizations, after-school programs, and youth leadership initiatives face many of the same culture and climate challenges as schools — and benefit from the same intentional, systems-aware approaches to belonging, wellbeing, and adult culture.

  • Expanding Professional Learning & Leadership Networks

The adults who shape youth environments need their own communities of practice. SCCI supports professional networks focused on culture, leadership, and shared values — helping practitioners sustain meaningful work over time.

  • Emerging New Partnerships

Not every context fits a pre-existing model — and that's by design. SCCI is actively exploring new settings and collaborative models where culture-centered approaches can take root in meaningful, community-specific ways.

Interested in Exploring a Partnership?

SCCI approaches every partnership collaboratively — starting with listening, not prescribing. We adapt our work to the unique needs, goals, culture, and community of each setting.

If you’re working in a youth-serving environment and wondering whether this kind of work might fit, we’d love to have that conversation.
