SSN Meeting “All Students Need to Matter” (March 20)

Date: 03/20/2024 - Time:

SSN Meeting “All Students Need to Matter: How to Foster Their Mattering and Positive Purpose”

Whether or not SEL and character-related interventions have the desired impact on students turns out to depend on the connection of the use of skills or the adherence to core values to students’ sense of mattering and purpose. We will discuss how to develop students sense of positive purpose and mattering, its connection to youth voice and classroom and school climate, and how and why some students choose to act out against self or others in pursuit of mattering through a negative purpose.

Presented by: Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, Rutgers University; Director, Rutgers Social-Emotional and Character Development Lab (www.SECDLab.org); Co-Director, Academy for Social-Emotional Learning in Schools (SELinSchools.org, sel.rutgers.edu, @SELinSchools)
